Feast Day: December 6th
The Life of Saint Nicholas: He was noted in particular for the fervency of his Prayer and kind-hearted nature, and the attention to charitable work that characterised his Priestly ministry…
Apolytikion: The truth of things hath revealed thee to thy flock as a rule of faith, an icon of meekness, and a teacher of temperance; for this cause, thou hast achieved the heights by humility, riches by poverty. O Father and Hierarch Nicholas, intercede with Christ God that our Souls be saved.
Kontakion: Saintly One, in Myra you proved yourself a Priest; for in fulfilling the Gospel of Christ, Venerable one, you laid down your life for your people and saved the innocent from death. For this you were Sanctified as one learned in Divine Grace.
Hymn: You reached the height of knowledge unflinchingly, and plumbed the depths of wisdom unspeakably, and through your teachings, you have enriched the whole world, O Father. Ever entreat Christ on behalf of us, O Hierarch Nicholas.
Saint Nicholas heard about a poor father who could not afford a dowry for his eldest daughter to be married, and had the intention of her to enter a sinful life instead. So Saint Nicholas tossed a small pouch of the exact amount of money through their window at night. This was sufficient dowry and the eldest girl was able to be married. Saint Nicholas secretly and humbly repeated this for each daughter when she became of age.
Upon travelling to the Holy Land, Saint Nicholas encountered many difficulties during his voyage on the ship, and through his Prayers he miraculously calmed the sea and strengthened the Souls of his fellow brethren on the Pilgrimage. He is an every-ready help to voyagers to this day.
Quote by Saint Nicholas
Children, I beseech you to correct your hearts and thoughts, so that you may be pleasing to God. Consider that although we may reckon ourselves to be righteous and frequently succeed in deceiving men, we can conceal nothing from God. Let us therefore strive to preserve the Holiness of our Souls and to guard the purity of our bodies with all fervour. Ye are the Temple of God, says the Divine Apostle Paul; if any man defile the Temple of God, him shall God destroy.
