Akathist Hymn

Paraklesis

Apolytikion: The truth of things hath revealed thee to thy flock as a rule of faith, an icon of meekness, and a teacher of temperance; for this cause, thou hast achieved the heights by humility, riches by poverty. O Father and Hierarch Nicholas, intercede with Christ God that our Souls be saved.

Kontakion: Saintly One, in Myra you proved yourself a Priest; for in fulfilling the Gospel of Christ, Venerable one, you laid down your life for your people and saved the innocent from death. For this you were Sanctified as one learned in Divine Grace.

Hymn: You reached the height of knowledge unflinchingly, and plumbed the depths of wisdom unspeakably, and through your teachings, you have enriched the whole world, O Father. Ever entreat Christ on behalf of us, O Hierarch Nicholas.

Saint Nicholas lived a Holy life from the moment of his conception, because his parents, Theophanes and Nonna, were Holy Christians living a life of Prayer, fasting and almsgiving. They consecrated their son to God at his birth, and Saint Nicholas always remembered the love and devotion to God of his parents, and he promised he would help anyone who remembers his parents in their Prayers.

+

As a very young child, Saint Nicholas loved to study Sacred Scriptures and Liturgical Texts. He was known to the local people as a devoted youth who would remain in the Church late into the night reading the Sacred Texts.

The local Bishop Nicholas of Patara was the Uncle of Saint Nicholas, his father’s brother. Having seen his nephew’s spiritual fervour, he tonsured him reader and later Ordained him a Priest. Because of the great Spirituality, love and charity he showed to all, Saint Nicholas was in turn loved by all and Ordained a Bishop.

Saint Nicholas was Blessed by God to work Miracles to all who asked for his Prayers, just as he continues to Pray for us all today. Saint Nicholas said “The Giver of every good and perfect gift has called upon us to mimic His giving, by Grace, through Faith, and this is not of ourselves.”

“Bring your tribulations to Saint Nicholas the Merciful and he will take them to the All-Merciful Saviour.” – Russian Proverb

Saint Nicholas heard about a poor father who could not afford a dowry for his eldest daughter to be married, and had the intention for her to enter a sinful life instead. So Saint Nicholas tossed a small pouch of the exact amount of money through their window at night. This was sufficient dowry and the eldest girl was able to be married. Saint Nicholas secretly and humbly repeated this for each daughter when she became of age.

+

The father of the daughters was so grateful, and when his third daughter became of age he stayed up at night to see who was helping them, and he thanked Saint Nicholas and God with all his heart.

Saint Nicholas participated in the First Ecumenical Council. Out of his Christian zeal, he striked Arius on the face for his constant arguing against right beliefs. Saint Nicholas was then stripped of his Bishop’s Omorphorion and Gospel, and imprisoned. However, many of his fellow Clergy received a vision of Saint Nicholas being visited by Our Most Holy Mother of God and Our Lord Jesus Christ, who returned to him his Vestments, for he was worthy, having acted not out of passion but from extreme love and piety.

+

Did you know, Our Most Holy Mother of God made the very first Omorphorion for Saint Lazarus, and it has since then become a Holy Vestment for Bishops.

Upon travelling to the Holy Land, Saint Nicholas encountered many difficulties during his voyage on the ship, and through his Prayers he miraculously calmed the sea and strengthened the Souls of his fellow brethren on the Pilgrimage. He is an every-ready help to voyagers to this day.

Saint Nicholas Reposed at an old age, and his Myrr-flowing Holy Relics are in the Church in Myra.

+

In Melbourne, Australia, we are Blessed to have a portion of the Holy Relics of Saint Nicholas at his Church of Saint Nicholas in Yarraville, and also at our Holy Parish of Saint Paraskevi.

“Children, I beseech you to correct your hearts and thoughts, so that you may be pleasing to God. Consider that although we may reckon ourselves to be righteous and frequently succeed in deceiving men, we can conceal nothing from God. Let us therefore strive to preserve the Holiness of our Souls and to guard the purity of our bodies with all fervour. Ye are the Temple of God, says the Divine Apostle Paul; if any man defile the Temple of God, him shall God destroy.”
